A Thought To Ponder

“A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his own thought to derive benefit from his illnesses.”

Hippocrates, regarded as the “Father of Medicine” and the greatest physician of his time, held the belief that the body must be treated as a whole and not just a series of parts. He taught his students that illness was the result of an imbalance of the body’s homeostatic and defense mechanisms. Hippocrates stressed the importance of fresh air, a good diet and plenty of exercise to help the body heal itself.

Can it be as simple as Hippocrates suggests?

The world has become increasing more complex, and in that complexity we sometimes over look or ignore the simple facts. In our quest to improve our world, we ignore the basics, and make some things far more complicated than they need be.

Health or disease comes from a complex interaction of physical, mental, emotional, dietary, genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and other factors. Symptoms (i.e. aches, pains, digestive problems, inflammation, chemical, hormone, blood pressure and sugar imbalances) are expressions of the body’s attempt to heal.

The simple truth is, most medicines mask the symptoms and ignore the cause. Every illness has an underlying cause, often in aspects of the lifestyle, diet or habits of the individual. It is, the body itself that is the true healer.

Human and animals alike are created with the capabilities needed not only to survive, but to thrive. The body is born with the natural ability to heal itself. When supported it can maintain and restore optimal health. If the human body appears to not be fully using its innate ability to fight disease and heal itself, it may be because it is using its energy to fight other challenges prioritized by the human mind.

Relieving stress, pampering the soul, and practicing a lifestyle

with balanced nutrition, exercise, rest, and play

will pay forward wellness dividends that can last a lifetime.
